"The Cat and the Canary" (1927) with live accompaniment Kotzschmar Organ

Get into the Halloween spirit with a spellbinding screening of The Cat and the Canary (1927), brought to life by Portland’s Municipal Organist, James Kennerley, performing a fully improvised score on the mighty Kotzschmar Organ.

This silent comedy-horror classic, known for its eerie charm and shadowy style, follows a group of heirs trapped in a haunted mansion as secrets—and a lunatic—emerge. Kennerley’s live accompaniment, inspired by composers like Louis Vierne, heightens every suspenseful turn and playful fright in real time, showcasing the timeless power of both film and music.

A perfect blend of vintage cinema, live artistry, and Halloween chills, this annual Halloween tradition will leave you thrilled, impressed, and maybe just a little spooked.
